BADGE NO BE LICENSE

BADGE NO BE LICENSE

By

Ikechukwu Frank

Who dey guard the road at night?

Police!

Who carry the badge and the gun?

Police!

But who guard the badge itself?

Na the law—and the people!

Police no be just uniform and siren,

No be checkpoint and “park well”,

E be idea wey law give body,

Authority wey get boundary,

Power wey suppose bow for justice,

Not swagger for street.

From colonial palava to independent hope,

History train am with mixed lessons,

Some from order, some from oppression,

We inherit structure without healing,

Uniform pass hand,

But trust still dey queue.

Command dey.

Control suppose dey too.

Order must flow, yes—

But obedience without conscience

Na danger with permission.

Who dey supervise?

Executive!

Who dey question am?

Parliament!

Who dey feel the impact?

The people!

Because power without eye

Go soon forget road.

Una work na prevent crime,

Keep peace,

Protect life and property,

Stand between weak man and mad violence,

No be to turn citizen to suspect

By default.

Search—yes.

Arrest—yes.

Investigate—yes.

But hear this well:

Power na trust,

No be inheritance,

No be personal property.

Discretion na fire,

If you handle am well, e warm society,

If you misuse am, e burn house,

Because “I just dey do my job”

No go save you from justice tomorrow.

Confession wey pain collect

No be truth,

Cell no be court,

Baton no be evidence,

Human rights no dey disappear

For station gate.

Force na last option,

No be first language,

No be anger outlet,

No be ego booster,

Uniform no cancel humanity,

Gun no silence dignity.

Make we talk true:

System hard.

Salary small.

Pressure choke.

Politics dey interfere.

Morale dey bend like zinc for sun.

But still—

Some officers no collect bribe,

Some no plant evidence,

Some stand ground when fear shout “run”,

Some still remember oath

When nobody dey watch.

Reform the system!

Now now!

Train the mind!

Not only the arm!

Equip the Force!

Without selling the soul!

Because security without trust

Na oppression in uniform,

And police without integrity

Na fear with badge,

Power without purpose,

Law without heart.

Make the badge mean honour again,

Make station mean help again,

Make uniform bring relief, not panic,

Make police fear law,

And make citizens trust peace.

Badge no be license!

Justice na the limit!

Power get boundary!

Law pass everybody!

Nigeria no ask for miracle—

Na good policing we want.
